Like I said HERE last year and HERE back in '95 (not to mention countless other times to many people), I TRULY believe music trends tend to go in circles....

To sum up my theory:
near the end of every decade, pop and dance start making a comeback, peak and blowout a little past the beginning of the next decade.

'05 showed signs of a possible upcoming emergence (as the second link shows)
'06 continued these signs and seemed to step it up

THIS YEAR

*Rihanna's new album (well, the first half) is dance/pop and unashamed of it.
*Darren Hayes new album supports this theory (what ive heard of it)
*The Spice Girl reunion chances actually seeing the light of day

OH AND THIS!

DURAN DURAN featuring TIMBALAND.... oh and JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE - "NIGHT RUNNER"

My bet..... This time next year, it will be undeniable. Pop will be coming back.

S*P is back... kinda. S*P became too big, and lost its original goal of promoting music that *I* like and introducing it to the american audience.

These days music blogs are a dime a dozen. I however, am not.

SPARK*POP is now just my audioblog. Just like it was in the beginning. AND just to anwser any questions, there was no behind the scenes drama with the demise of S*P. Even ask the others who used to contribute! We are all still friends.

So no drama. just great music from me. Yay. S*P is back.

After much thought and consideration, it has been decided to bring SPARK*POP to a close.

Unfortunatly, most of the "staff" and I are too busy to give S*P the attention that it in fact deserves. The goal of this blog was to open up some american ears to the GREAT music being released worldwide (but not stateside). Unfortuantly, living in the USA, its A LOT more work to discover awesome music from around the globe (that is NOT getting played in the USA). It was totally worth it and I have every intention of continuing my quest.

We had an AMAZING 2 years and I thank each and every one of you who has visited the site in that time. I wanna thank Terry, Ryan, Zane, Phil and anyone else who contributed to this blog. I also thank the SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN newspaper for the awesome article that mentioned S*P and for all the compliments. I want to thank the record companies that contributed material and news and I also wanna say thanks for all the advertising offers on the site. We never featured any adverts, but its flattering that they had enough faith in the site to ask.

All is not lost, I will be contributing regularly to DontStopThePop!

This way, you still benefit from my awesome music taste!

This time ten years ago, a glimmer of pop music hope was just begining. Early 1997, Savage Garden was ruling the american airwaves with their first single, "I Want You". In the #6 position on the Billboard album chart was a little-known girl band who had just appeared with their first single, "Wannabe", released their album and then released ANOTHER album. "Quit Playing Games With My Heart" was the first Backstreet Boys single and was released in, you guessed it, 1997. Of course, there was still much wading thru crap like Jewel and LeAnn Rhymes, but the stage had been set for pops comeback.

We salute you 1997! Heres hoping that history repeats itself!

Anna Nicole... Rest in Peace

Im sure that you have heard by now that Anna Nicole Smith passed away yesterday in Florida.

You know her story, so im not gonna repeat it. It really is sad. I was a fan of hers after seeing her reality show. I was shocked by the news of the death of her son, but this was just CRAZY. It didnt feel real all day yesterday.

Perhaps that why you arent getting this post until now.

It was quite obvious that Anna Nicole suffered on a daily basis with her various demons and its very sad to see it all end up this way. She was only human. The media circus surrounding this has been ridiculous.

You will be missed Anna Nicole.

2006 is almost over! Can you freakin believe it?

The past two years, ive looked at my YEAR-END countdowns and wondered if I would be able to even pick 10 good songs in the next year. Well luckily, SOME good music squeaked thru.

Im not worried though. AS I POINTED OUT A YEAR AGO... History repeats itself.... at the end of each decade since the '60s, the POP and DANCE music start to have a stateside resurgance. Its almost time. Just watch.

This is the first year that I have actually placed the songs in any kind of an order. Previous years, I just posted the 10 best.

Hopefully '07 will make the task of ONLY picking 10 songs even harder next year, im certainly up for the challenge! I wouldnt count on it just yet though.

Heres my TOP 10 of '06

Roxane - "Push It"

Belgium introduced us to Roxane, via EUROVISION this year. The song didnt win (the good ones never do) but Roxane did find herself a large fan following. Cant wait to hear whats next!

Rihanna - "SOS"

OK, so who in the free world DOESNT know this song? I didnt want to like it but it quickly grew on me. The "Tainted Love" sample helped it to lead HUGE commercial success worldwide. I love when an artist can use a sample and do something COMPLETELY different with it, not just copy it.

Nelly Furtado - "Say It Right"

I STILL cannot believe this song was released stateside! Its at #6 this week on the US Billboard charts. This is my absolute favourite song off of her album LOOSE.

Goldfrapp - "Ride A White Horse"

BRILLIANT song... its about the only Goldfrapp song I havent heard on a TV commercial lately. If you havent seen the video yet, I recommend checking it out.

Darren Hayes - "Something in the Sky"

This song was a b-side on the "So Beautiful" single. It sounds like it should have been on his The Tension and the Spark album.

The Savage Garden Greatest Hits collection was also released this year. The record company however did ZERO promotion and the CDs were quite hard to find stateside.

All Saints - "Rock Steady"

The "Never Ever" girls reappeared from pop obscurity this year with a suprisingly great song and an even better fued with Girls Aloud. Once again, this saw no release in the states and probably never will.

Elize - "Into Your System"

After hearing "Automatic", I knew she wouldnt be able to do anything better ever again and gave up hope on her. Her previous singles kinda... sucked. THEN SHE RELEASED THIS.

Thank You Elize. All hope is not lost.

Rouge Traders - "Voodoo Child"

AMAZING SONG..... and an album with FOUR SONGS that I like!? Thats rare these days! They had some GREAT follow up singles and they started to see a UK release late in the year. This song has gone TOP 5 everywhere it has been released (but Ireland). If you havent heard it yet, CHECK IT OUT!

Sugababes - "Easy"

I can sum this song up in one word... RELIEF. I was worried about the post-Mutya Sugababes but at least this one song shows hope.

I miss Mutya.

These were demos spanning their entire career and still to this day have not been released commercially or even for promotion. Other great songs of the year included O-Zone's "Dragostea Din Tei", "Hole In The Head" by Sugababes, and OF COURSE "Unlovable" by Darren Hayes! '04 saw the dance trend continue but by then I started to really get into the imports. Remember, all these songs were ALL in my TOP 10 in 2004, so you KNOW they're good!

“Some people say you can’t make left-field pop music and be commercial,” announces Siobhan Donaghy, “and that’s bullshit. They always say that when there’s nothing else out there like it. I remember what was on the radio when my career began and God, it’s so diverse now in comparison. And it feels good to be a part of it.”

At 22, Siobhan is unrecognizable from the 16-year-old songbird whose laconic gaze first swept across the Sugababes’ ‘Overload’ video in the summer of 2000. She’s unrecognizable visually, musically and emotionally, her second solo album, ‘Ghosts’, a stunning sonic progression from her debut in 2003, ‘Revolution in Me’, the startling result of a collaborative “vision” from the enigmatic mind of producer/programmer James Sanger, best known for his multi-million-selling work with Keane, U2, Dido and Brian Eno. Certainly, as Siobhan says, there’s nothing else out there like it: as coolly dramatic as vintage Kate Bush, as vocally ephemeral as the Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser, as electro-dazzling as ‘Ray of Light’-era Madonna – a vivid dreamscape created in what Siobhan calls “a twilight zone” in coastal, north east France by an artist now fully emerged from the chrysalis her teenage self only hinted at.

“I wanted emotive sounds,” says Siobhan, “but sounds that were universal. I wouldn’t wanna be some obscure, poncey artist y’know? I am still pop.” This is pop sophistication at its classiest; dazzling, planet-sized future-pop pulsing with loss, pain, fear, forgiveness, running away – and hope. Made in a tiny French town, it’s a Big sound: from the orchestral swell of ‘So You Say’, to the soaring dramatics of ‘Coming Up For Air’, to the booming bass of the epic ‘Medivac’, to the eastern-tinged disco-pop of ‘Sometimes’ to the guitar-fried ’12 Bar Acid Blues’ to the head-spinning sorcery of colossal first single, ‘Don’t Give It Up’, a masterclass in mesmerizing, psychedelic longing. And then there’s the magical, lush-stringed beauty of ‘There Is A Place’, as if young Olivia Newton John suddenly turned up on one of Noel Gallagher’s greatest ballads. And the extraordinary title-track ‘Ghosts’, full of random words and backwards production trickery, no less than a sonic monastery.

“I’m now obsessed with my music,” she beams, “and I’ve become a real perfectionist. If I want a specific thing I have to have it and it feels good to know what I want. And this is what I want.”

2003 changed everything for then-19 year old Siobhan. Mere months after the release of the critically well-received ‘Revolution In Me (produced by pop guru Cameron McVey), she was dropped from London Records, a victim of the label’s 2003 take-over by Warners. “Everyone was dropped,” Siobhan laughs today, “everyone! But I like London Records, they signed me when I was 14, with the girls, they kept me on solo and let me make whatever kind of record I wanted to make. So I got it out of my system. And I decided from then on I’d just take everything on the chin. Much worse things, in life, can happen.”

In 2004, after an extended holiday in America, Portugal and Thailand, now a searching soul who was reading ‘Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance’, Siobhan returned to a phone call, out of the blue, from James Sanger - through her long-term management at CMO (home to Blur, Gorillaz, Graham Coxon, Turin Brakes). Inspired by ‘Revolution In Me’, Sanger was interested in a collaboration and Siobhan, intrigued and won over by his enthusiasm, hooked up with this producer she’d never even heard of, who would go on to push her musically and emotionally to unforeseeable creative heights, recording in his studio in north-west coastal France. Here was the “ghost-town” setting which would inspire the most unearthly and sophisticated music of Siobhan’s life. There would be musical “listening sessions”: intense studies in appreciation of the Cocteau Twins, Kate Bush, Shakespear’s Sister, Brian Eno and experimental ambient music.

“The more the record went on the more I wanted it to be really other-worldly.” The partnership, sometimes, was fraught. James, a quintessential creative, was prone to emotional peaks and troughs while Siobhan, too, was coming to terms with her own break-up. But it was great for the writing.” It was great, too, for vocal freedom, Siobhan using dramatic new techniques, “and I was left thinking James is quite the eccentric genius. We definitely brought out the best in each other, music-wise”.

In November 2005, the still-unsigned Siobhan approached Parlophone records, her ideal label, “all British artists want to sign to Parlophone”, with a three-track demo-tape, including ‘So You Say’, ‘There Is A Place’ and ‘Don’t Give It Up’. They signed her immediately.

“There can be a lot of rejection in this industry,” smiles Siobhan, “so it was a real confidence booster! And they really find the time to have a relationship with their artists. They’ve been working with me, not against me. It doesn’t feel corporate. It feels like an indie label.”

They encouraged her visual ideas, too, which reflect the music of ‘Ghosts’, through dreamscape imagery from acclaimed photographer/director/visual artist Floria Sigismondi who’s created visuals for Christina Aguilera, the White Stripes, and Bjork.

“It is glam,” laughs Siobhan. “I wanted fantasy. I wanted to create a world around me. Trippy and fantastical. I’m not a teenager anymore. And I’m glad to be rid of it. Bring on the 20s. The 30s even!”

This year, staggeringly, is Siobhan’s 10^th anniversary of life as a professional artist, the London school-girl discovered aged 12 by Ron Tom, the ex-All Saints manager who went on to manage the fledgling Sugababes. No wonder her three and a half years in the ‘Babes have almost faded to insignificance, a band Siobhan rightly sees as “a brand now, and that’s not something I could be involved in, we just couldn’t be more different”. She concentrates fully on today, eyeing the future.

“The things that have happened to me,” ponders Siobhan, “leaving the Sugababes and then what happened with my last record, people might think ‘God, she must be gutted’. And it’s actually been the complete opposite. I think it’s been wonderful. For me it’s all been a positive, the people I’ve met, the people I’ve worked with. It’s so bizarre; I grew up not wanting to be a singer and then when I became a singer I wasn’t writing songs and suddenly I’m this songwriter. My life could’ve been so different. What if I’d never had that chance meeting with my first manager and I sang him some random song? I think, ‘what would I be doing?’ and then I think, ‘God, I am so lucky’. It goes without saying how many people wanna do this. And I seem to be this cat with nine lives. And people keep letting me come back. From the dead!”•

So I must confess, this band is REALLY growing on me. From the first second I heard "Chelsea", I was hooked. Now keep in mind, im no journalist and I don't have the best grammar so bear with me as i attempt to stumble thru the world that IS, Stefy.

They have a GREAT new song and video out titled "Hey School Boy". Its the second single off their debut album : THE ORANGE ALBUM.

Now, lets take a look at their official bio to get the full story on Stefy.

STEFY is a band with the energy of No Doubt, and an incredibly sexy front woman, Stefy Rae, who combines the brashness of Pink and the commanding stage presence of Debbie Harry. Rae is bold and captivating as the focal point of the electro-infused rock band, STEFY.

Whether singing about moving on from a torrid relationship, getting over a boy who is as fake as “Orange Crush,” or lamenting about a pair of teens in Orange County who lose their innocence too early, Rae's melodic voice has a subtle force, making it the only aspect of this band that isn’t totally in-your-face. With Sean Meyer (guitar), Jason Gaviati (keys) and Andreas Brobjer (drums), STEFY unleashes a barrage of pop hooks and electric rock energy on their album and on stage.

Rae credits her quirky, Bolivian grandmother who was also a singer, with inspiring her to pursue her dream.

"My grandmother is a wild child," Rae said. "She isn't afraid of anything. I remember her singing live on the radio all the time in Bolivia.”

"She is also a very strong person," Rae continued. "She came from another country with seven kids not knowing where they were gonna live, not knowing the language. Just packed up her bags and left. Her free spirit and strength is what inspires me."

Rae looked for that same sense of uniqueness in her band as well. Gaviati has performed with his own band and toured with Roc-A-Fella artist Samantha Ronson. Meyer was gigging whilst studying at Musicians Institute. Brobjer has gigged all around Europe. The trio brings an air of exuberance and fresh ideas to STEFY.

STEFY's debut album reflects the band members' myriad of talents. “Chelsea,” the first single, is a strutting electro-stomp about a “cold-as-ice” woman who stole the singer’s boyfriend and then poured salt in the wound when “She called me while you were kissing / So I could hear what I was missing."

On an album filled with danceable, pop tracks, STEFY shows their versatility on “Orange County” – an emotional, narrative song about two teenagers who get pregnant, drop out of high school and have to get real jobs. “It’s a ‘where have all the good times gone’ song,” Rae said of the track which highlights her vocals, featuring a sparse beat and melancholy keys. The lyrics question “the things we think that we need for our American dream.”

“I like those realistic songs,” Rae said. “Kids screw up, we mess up, and everyone’s singing about the fairy tales and no one is singing about the truth. I feel that writing songs that draw from what I have seen and experience in my life makes our music easy to relate to.”

Opening with swirling synths, "Orange Crush" is an upbeat, playful track. A ride on the new wave, the song about a boy who is about as fake as the drink, "Orange Crush" is a hook-laden, dance track with lyrics like "you're flat and stale / I had to bail."

Though their debut hasn't even hit stores yet, the producers of the Fox film John Tucker Must Die noticed STEFY's talent early on and hired them to pen a song for the upcoming movie starring Jesse Metcalfe, Ashanti and "One Tree Hill" actress Sophia Bush. STEFY's "Fool For Love," about "a dorky girl who becomes popular and gets the cool guy to like her," will be featured in both the film and the soundtrack, as will "Chelsea."

As infectious as STEFY's songs are on their album, the band is twice as enthralling live. "When I'm on stage I want to give people a good show," Rae said. "I am inspired by artists like David Bowie and Prince - when they perform, they get into character - you wouldn't want to look anywhere else than right at the stage.”

"That's what I like to put into my shows," she added. "I roll around on the floor and just really go for it."

The embodiment of grit, guts and natural allure, STEFY is poised to thrash onto the music scene. After years of charging towards her dreams, Rae has earned the right to embrace her band's fans, treating them to an album of electric pop gems. And if anyone dares to doubt her, Rae says their criticisms just provide fuel for her musical fire.

Per Gessle of Roxette announced a few weeks ago that every Monday, a new Roxette demo would appear at ROXETTE.S E.

The first week was the demo for their current single, "One Wish". Also the site had technical problems so the demo had to be posted on Per's MySpace.

Yesterday, the "Crush on You" demo (1998) was released and available to stream and let me tell you, ITS GREAT. I miss Marie on the vocals but I LOVE hearing these demos! Check it out!

Riding the 80s revival wave that is seeming to sweep up music as of late, Stefy emerged from Orange County in California with their first single "Chelsea". Apparently this song was released stateside although I don't recall ever hearing it which is DEFENATLY a shame.

Ya know, its REALLY hard to stand by a band that doesnt seem to give a rats ass about their fans, but the music is no less than fucking awesome (They are by FAR my #1 band on LAST.FM) so theres nothing I can do about it. The bands *cough* manager..... FINALLY posted an update on AceOfBase.com this week.

FINALLY! The new single or album info! Could the TOUR 2007 rumours that Aftonbladet (Swedish tabloid) reported be true? Could the rumours of a new album this year as reported by Germany's RTL be true? To sum it up, no.

The groups "manager" Lasse posted an update stating that AoB has NOT been asked to participate in Eurovision and implied anyone who believed these papers were "stupid". To be fair, I have posted the update below:

"To make some information cleared, In Swedish news papers there have been roomers the last two days about Ace of Base being a possible candidate for participating in the Swedish Eurovision song contest.This is not correct!

There’s never been any official request from SVT (Swedish Television) if the band is interested to participate for Sweden in the Eurovision song contest.So to valuate if or what the band feel about a question they never received seems kind of stupid.Same thing about question about the UK! UK or I should say BBC has never requested the band to participate for them in the Eurovision song contest.

He went on to explain that "So many things need to be organised if Ace of Base were to enter Melodifestivalen. The strategy from Universal Music is for Ace of Base to release their music internationally and not to target the group solely at the Swedish market. We can't release something only in Sweden, and Melodifestivalen is solely about the Swedish market. If it was to be of interest to us, it would need to have a wider perspective. Remember that Ace of Bace were signed in Denmark, not Sweden".
Asked about participating in another country, perhaps the United Kingdom, esctoday.com was told: "We would be very interested in entering from another country. We have not spoken to the BBC but having released so many singles in the United Kingdom with success. The United Kingdom would certainly be in our thinking".

OK, So why couldnt he have said that on AOB.com instead of calling everyone stupid?

Does Ace of Base even care about their fans anymore?

Billboard reports that Gwen's new album and a brand new DVD with concert footage from her last tour will be out by the end of the year! The first single is supposed to be "Wind Me Up". I saw her do it live on the opening night of her tour last year. There was a low quality version of the song floating around the net about a year ago, oh and look, it just happens to be right here!

Wikipedia reports : "The single is to be released in late October or early November. Gwen is also scheduled to begin promoting her new single and album at the end of October. The music video dance rehearsals will take place from October 17-29. Recently ShoTyme, the choeregrapher has said the video will be shot October 30th thru November 1st in Chicago,Il. The lyrics of the song talk about Stefani's clothing line, LAMB and how boys love to stare at Gwen and her fellow girls. The song was first revealed by Gwen on her Harajuku Lovers Tour. The song samples "The Lonely Goatherd" from 'The Sound Of Music.'"

It was confirmed by none other than Mister Per Gessle himself, the manly side of Roxette (not counting the haircuts over the years). Swedish newspaper Expressen had a whole article on it yesterday (in swedish). The Daily Roxette is offering an english translation (LOVE that site!).

Most americans have heard from Roxette in the past few days at least. Roxette's older hits like "It Must Have Been Love" and "The Look" still get decent airplay (not to mentioned are used in a few jingles). New music from Roxette is a different story.

In 2000, Roxette signed with Edel America Records and released their greatest hits titled : DONT BORE US, GET TO THE CHORUS with 2 "new" songs. These songs were not new at all. They had in fact been released a year prior on Roxette's HAVE A NICE DAY album (which was not released stateside). The first version of their greatest hits (with the same title, but different artwork) had been released 5 years earlier worldwide. Edel America Records went under the very same year and Roxette was once again without an american record company.

Since the live "Tourism" album in 1994, the USA would never again see a coordinated Roxette released with the rest of the world.

Today im starting a new series of posts named THE BEST POP AMERICA FORGOT. Im going to feature songs that were big in the world since the most recent a-pop-calypse here stateside. 2001 proved to be the beginning of the end of the pop music that had ruled american airwaves for 5 years up to that point. A huge media backlash then started and the american music scene began to spiral in to bad hair and wannabe punk music. Horrible words like 'emo' and 'metrosexual' began to filter into american pop culture , and we all became a little dumber for it.

Today saw the release of the highly anticpated sophomore album from Scissor Sisters. It was released everywhere but here in the US, us yanks have to wait another week and a day for ours. Fortunately, I was able to score my copy a bit ago.

How is it? I think it's a great album. Was it worth the wait? I think so.

Kiss You Off- Ana Matronic's only solo song on the album, I really like this one.

Lights- great lyrics like: "got your seed on my face you put those babies to waste without your finger in the back"... nuff said.
